Work of Dutch RAC members

BPA workplace limit

The RAC has adopted an opinion on the scientific evaluation of a limit value for 4,4’-isopropylidenediphenol (bisphenol A; BPA) and the screening of other bisphenols. The two Dutch RAC members acted as rapporteurs.

The Committee recommends establishing an occupational exposure limit (OEL) of 24 µg/m³ to protect workers against the effects of BPA on fertility. This limit value would also provide protection against other effects of BPA.

In addition, the RAC recommends including a statement in the regulatory provisions for BPA to protect unborn children and breastfed infants against potential harm caused by exposure to BPA in utero or during early life.

Finally, following a preliminary screening of several relevant studies on other bisphenols, the RAC concluded that the recommended limit for BPA may not be sufficiently stringent to protect against exposure to bisphenol S (BPS), bisphenol F (BPF) and bisphenol AF (BPAF).
