Collaboration with Austria on Restriction Dossier for PPDs

Restriction

In December, colleagues from Austria’s Umweltbundesamt received ministerial approval to jointly prepare a restriction proposal for PPDs together with the Netherlands.

These substances are used in rubber tyres as antioxidants and antiozonants to extend tyre lifespan. A project proposal was drawn up at the end of 2024. Preparatory work will begin in 2025, followed by the drafting of the actual restriction proposal in 2026, aimed at limiting the use of these highly toxic compounds to salmonids in rubber tyres. The expected submission date will be announced on the ECHA website in the course of 2025.

In the United States, it has been shown that transformation products of these substances, originating from tyre wear, enter surface water following dry periods and have caused mass mortality of salmon. Comparable concentrations have been measured in Europe, which may also pose risks to salmonid species.
